My Grandmother Saved $26,418 for My Future — Then I Discovered Who Had Emptied the Account

“I’m sorry, but someone withdrew the entire balance months ago.” Those words from Priya, the teller at Lakeside Credit Union, made my stomach drop. I was 26, standing there in my nursing scrubs, clutching the last birthday card my grandmother had given me. Every March, since I was four, Grandma had deposited $1,000 toward my future, eventually building the account to $26,418.37. She had raised me after my mother, Diane Mercer, left to start another family. Even when money was tight, Grandma repaired her old coat and sacrificed comforts to protect my education. When Priya showed me the withdrawal record dated March 14, I recognized the signature immediately: my mother had taken everything using a power of attorney.

That date changed everything. Grandma had been hospitalized with advanced cancer, and Diane had visited with a notary while Grandma was heavily medicated. With help from family attorney Margaret Holloway, I obtained medical records showing Grandma was disoriented that morning. We contacted Detective Lena Alvarez and demanded repayment to Grandma’s estate. I sent Diane a package at her workplace containing Grandma’s patched coat, twenty-two birthday cards, the bank statement, and the attorney’s letter. Her furious phone call came minutes later. Facing an investigation and possible court proceedings, Diane lost her banking job and eventually returned the full amount after her husband sold their SUV. She received probation, a fine, and community service. I finished nursing school and later began working in oncology. But Grandma’s greatest investment wasn’t the money. When my half-sister Kayla turned seventeen, I opened a savings account for her with $1,000 and promised to keep adding to it. Grandma’s generosity would continue through another generation.
