Doctor Says Christa Pike May Be “Too Sick” for Another Execution — After Two Failed Lethal Injection Attempts

The execution chamber fell into an extraordinary scene on September 30 when Tennessee officials tried twice to carry out Christa Pike’s lethal injection, only to stop after repeated difficulties establishing an IV. Pike, 50, had been scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years, but the procedure reportedly stretched on for over an hour as staff struggled to gain access to a vein. Her attorney, Randy Spivey, said at least seven needles were used on her left arm, with one reportedly found bent after an unsuccessful attempt. Pike was eventually taken from the prison to an outside hospital for medical treatment. The failed execution also prompted Governor Bill Lee to pause Tennessee executions for the remainder of the year while an independent review examines what happened.

Now, an anesthesiology expert says Pike’s medical condition could become a major factor in whether Tennessee can attempt another execution. Dr. Joel Zivot, an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, argued that inserting an IV catheter requires specialized medical skill and said the difficulty of obtaining access was not surprising given the circumstances. He also suggested that the pentobarbital may have entered surrounding tissue instead of reaching the bloodstream as intended. Pike’s attorneys have described blistering and burning on her arms, while Zivot warned she could require extensive medical treatment and potentially face heart complications. But the bigger question now is what happens if those injuries leave Pike permanently impaired…
